We want anyone around Hay who wants to get stronger to be able to train with us, whatever they can afford. Our prices are on the Small Gym and Personal Training pages. This page explains how we set them, and what to do if they're more than you can manage.
If the price is a barrier
Tell us, and we'll offer you a reduced place. You don't need to give a reason or show us anything.
A reduced one-to-one place is usually about £45 a session instead of £60, and there are reduced places for pairs, small groups and Small Gym memberships too. If that's still too much, tell us what would work.
Ask when you book, when we tell you the price, or at any time after: in person, by email, or by ringing or texting 07877 766267.
If a GP or social prescriber has referred you, we'll offer you a reduced place without your needing to ask.
Full prices pay for the reduced places, so there are a set number each block. If they're taken, we'll offer you one in the next block.
Your first Small Gym class and your first hour of personal training are free.
How we set our prices
We start from what two coaches need to earn a modest living in Hay, and divide it by the hours we can coach in a year. That comes to about £75 for each hour of coaching, which also covers the planning, travel, halls, kit, insurance and tax behind it.
Pairs, small groups and classes share that hour between more people, so each person pays less. Training with others is the cheapest way to train with us.
Paying weekly costs the same as paying for a whole block, and ten classes cost the same as ten single classes, so nobody pays more for not having a lump sum available.
Changes
We review our prices every October, and give at least a block's notice of any change, with the reason.
Once Small Gym Hay is set up as a gym owned by its members, they'll set its prices.
Our approach comes from Bear Hebert's course Freely: an anti-capitalist guide to setting your rates. If you have a question about it, or an idea for how we could do it better, tell us.
